1st Time Playing for Mill Creek - Important Information
First time football player!
So your child has decided they want to play football and you need something easy to handle the process. We have built this 1st Time Player’s Playbook just for you!
My child wants to play football, what age group will he play?
We have great news! When you register your child with our online system it will automatically assign his or her age group. The age group is based almost identical to school, so the age your child on September 1 is the age group he will play.
Will my child have to play against big kids?
Yes, the GFL does not play weight based football, we play age based football. So at times your child will face players bigger and smaller than they may be. Most importantly they will play with players they will participate and compete against all the way through high school.
How do I register?
If you found this document then you are already half way there, you need to look on www.millcreekaa.net for Registration and register for the 2010 Football Season. Now if it is prior to March 27th @ 10:00am you can’t register yet. But on March 27th @ 10:00am registration will open for the 2010 football season.
Where will we practice?
Mill Creek Football practices at 1 of 3 locations, either Bogan Park, Duncan Creek Park, or Osborne Middle School. Your team will be assigned a location by the board and these locations and times are based upon age group and field space required to practice.
How often do we practice?
For the first 2 weeks of the football season practice is 5 days a week for 2 hours per day, we won’t practice on Sunday but some scheduling and rainout require practices to shuffle during the first 2 weeks. After school starts 6 year old players practice 2 nights per week, 7 year old to 8th grade practice 3 nights per week each for 90 minutes.
What time do we practice?
Practice times vary by age group and by location, we try very hard to control traffic flow so practices for younger age groups can start as early as 5:45pm and as late as 6:30pm and then older age group kids can start as early as 7:30pm and as late as 8:15pm.
How does my child get on a team?
All players must participate in a mandatory 2 day tryout, check the calendar for date and time, it will be in late July. On this Wednesday & Thursday night the selected head coaches and staffs will run through a set of drills, and then rate every player on a GFL mandated system. Each team will then be drafted by those head coaches and an equal amount of A / B / C / D players will be divided amongst each team.
What if my son wants to play with his friends?
The draft only accommodates immediate family members, no ride request or direct coach selection is allowed. Teams tend to have 20 to 25 players so typically everyone knows someone from school on their team.
I have more questions who do I call?
Each age group will be assigned an Age Group Coordinator; this is your primary conduit for questions prior to your child being drafted on a football team. You can find your Age Group Coordinator under the Staff tab on our League website (www.mcfootball.com) or visit www.millcreekaa.net to be directed to appropriate football pages.
What is the registration process for a new player?
- Make sure to register as early as possible. March 28th 10:00am is the starting point.
- We prefer you register online and then visit Mill Creek High School to have uniform fittings done, uniforms are ordered in advance and sizes cannot be changed after the March 28th registration.
- Visit the GFL Forms table. Your player will have to sign a GFL form and you will have to sign the GFL form as well and turn in a copy of the form.
- Visit the birth certificate table. You will need to bring with you an original raised seal birth certificate; we will make a copy of that birth certificate and complete the certification process. All players require a certified birth certificate to participate.
- Visit the uniform update computers where volunteers will change those sizes you guessed at from home.
- Plan a trip to the sports store over the summer, new player’s especially young players struggle with the helmet and is typically the reason they want to quite. Get them fitted and wear the helmet some over the summer, it will help come late July when practice starts. You will need to purchase a helmet (we wear Las Vegas Sting Gold), practice pants, pads for pants, shoulder pads, mouth piece, and some football cleats. Please make sure you budget some growth as football season starts in July and end in November.
- Start watching your email and check the websites regularly. We use the GFL physical form, so if you go to a local physician please download the 2010 physical form; it will be on the GFL website, and this site.
- Continue to watch for calendar updates. The Mill Creek High School puts on a Youth Football Camp every year, cost should be $85.00 to $100.00 and will be July 12-15. Please watch the schedule for updates on dates and registration process for the camp.
- Get ready to come to tryouts! You are no longer a first timer!
